Orthodontic Options For Adults

If you were not able to have braces as a child or during your teenage years, it is still possible to have your teeth straightened as an adult. Of course, orthodontia has made much progress in the past decade so you will not be stuck wearing metal bands on your teeth. You have different options that will allow you to get the nice, straight teeth you have always wanted with very few people knowing you are having it done. Here are just a few options to discuss with the orthodontist.

Clear Retainers

One option that many people find fits in with their lifestyle is clear retainers. The doctor takes molds of your teeth and creates clear, removable retainers that are just slightly different than your teeth. As you wear them, your teeth move to fit into them. You will have new retainers every few weeks to make small adjustments until your teeth are perfectly aligned. This treatment is for people who do not have teeth that are crossing each other or are majorly out of place. You can take the retainers out for a while each day, perhaps when you have an important meeting and do not want anyone to notice them. However, unless someone gets close to you they are not very noticeable. The more you wear the retainers, the quicker your teeth will move into place.

Clear Ceramic Braces

Clear ceramic braces are made of a clear or tooth-colored ceramic material. They are glued to the front of your teeth and do have a wire that runs through them, but because of the brackets, the wire is not noticeable. The coloring of the brackets makes them hard to see as well. However, unlike the retainers, you will not be able to take these off until the treatment is complete and will have a few dietary restrictions to keep them from falling off between orthodontist visits.

Lingual Braces

This type of braces is like the traditional metal brackets and wires. However, instead of being on the front of your teeth they are on the back side where no one can see them. They are designed for people who have teeth that are extremely crooked and/or have major jaw misalignment. Unfortunately, they do take some time to get used to as your tongue will constantly press up against the brackets.

No matter how old you are, it is never too late to have your teeth straightened. Not only will this give you a pleasant smile, it will make cleaning your teeth easier, reduce places for cavities to hide, and can help with your speech and self confidence. Talk with your dentist about recommending an orthodontist and get things started.
